And yet, when I'm in Mom Mode with my 7-year-old son, Oliver, I just can't hide the fact that I'm American. This kind of helicopter behavior is fairly common among American parents — but less so in France. French kids are always impeccably dressedIt may sound like French kids are running wild, but that's not the case — and their wardrobes are evidence of that. After seeing school shootings on the news, I started kissing my son goodbye at school each morning. Now that he's 10, he's starting to pull away from me when I go in for the kiss. With each new school shooting, I could only think of the parents who had lost children.

There's one major thing the West could, but won't, do: kill all Russian banks' access to the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications, or SWIFT. 'Russia's economy is in deep, deep trouble'Despite the West's frustration with how Russia's economy still appears to be holding up, the sanctions appear to be finally working. "In five years, you're going see a really disastrous slowdown in the Russian economy," said Portes, who called for stronger sanctions enforcement. AdvertisementIn April 2022, Russia's central bank governor Elvira Nabiullina warned Russia's reserves can't last forever. "A significant problem is that they are running out of foreign exchange reserves, and you can't create foreign reserves," Portes added.

Within the span of seven years, Kopi Kenangan went from a local Indonesian coffee stall to a venture-backed unicorn coffee company. "Instead of focusing on the sofa, or fast Wi-Fi, we're going to focus on a good, high quality cup of coffee," Tirtanata said. This decision helped Kopi Kenangan scale to over 200 locations and 10 cities within the first two years of operations. Taking a data-driven hyperlocal approach means that a Kopi Kenangan latte in Singapore will taste different from a latte in Indonesia. This helped Kopi Kenangan more than triple its store count during the pandemic.

CNN —Travis Kelce knows he’s “biased,” but he’s pretty open about where his heart lies. At his second annual Kelce Jam music festival, the professional football player was asked about his favorite musical era of his girlfriend Taylor Swift’s career. “I’m a big ‘1989’ fan,” Kelce told “Access Hollywood.” “But I’m not going to lie, I may be a little biased towards ‘The Tortured Poets Department.’ Just a little bit.”Makes sense given that many listeners believe Kelce may have inspired a song or two on “The Tortured Poets Department,” Swift’s latest album. As for which of her songs he’d include in his music festival, which he puts on in Kansas City as a thank you to the supporters of the team he plays for, the Kansas City Chief tight end took a minute to consider. “‘So High School’ is the only one that’s coming to my mind now,” he said.

The decision caused a lot of upset because the child wanted to go to the Caribbean just as much as her dad and his relatives wanted her there. Six years on, with the benefit of hindsight, the mom said she could have handled the situation differently. "I thought that, instead of being about me and how I felt, it was about really considering the child," the mom said. For example, she said that her middle daughter usually spends Thanksgiving at her dad's house and Christmas at her mom's every year.

The Upshot last week updated one of its earliest and most popular projects: the Rent or Buy calculator. The new calculator takes into account the 2017 tax law that affected the mortgage-interest deduction and limited SALT deductions. Because our math takes into account the full cycle of owning — buying, annual costs and then selling — home price appreciation can vastly change your results. The same house might look like a great financial decision at 8 percent housing value growth, and a bad one at 4 percent. Give the calculator a whirl here, and take note that you can now save and share your results.
CNN —The Supreme Court on Monday declined to review an appeal from a group of parents who claimed their suburban Washington-area school district was hiding transgender support plans involving their children. It’s the latest in a series of cases where the high court has dodged the issue of transgender rights at school – often leaving in place lower court rulings that sided with trans students. The appeals court said that the parents had not established that they were injured in a way that allowed them to sue. Three years ago, the Supreme Court declined to take up an appeal from a Virginia school district about whether schools may ban transgender students from using a bathroom that reflects their gender identity. Last year, the court denied West Virginia’s request to let it enforce a state law that bans transgender women and girls from participating on public school sports teams.

A lot goes into creating and managing an income-producing portfolio that works for you. Knowing your expenses will give you a good sense of the income you’ll need. Ways to generate incomeTake the income you think you’ll need and subtract from that the income you expect. For example, if you need $65,000 a year but will only bring in $40,000, you’ll need to generate the other $25,000. • For money you’ll need in three to five years, use short-term corporate bonds as well as longer-term CDs.

New York CNN —Ivan Boesky, the infamous insider trader whose name became synonymous with financial greed and helped inspire the fictional character Gordon Gekko in the 1987 film “Wall Street,” has died. His daughter, Marianne Boesky, confirmed to CNN on Monday that he died in his sleep. He pleaded guilty in 1986 to insider trading and was sentenced to three years of prison and fined $100 million, half of which went to returning the profits he made from insider trading and the other half as a civil penalty. "Consumers continue to be even more discriminating with every dollar that they spend as they faced elevated prices in their day-to-day spending," McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski said on the company's conference call in late April. Paul Weaver | SOPA Images | Getty ImagesFor more than two years, consumers have dealt with sharply rising prices. But that doesn't mean the actual prices seen on grocery store shelves or restaurant menus will fall, and shoppers are feeling that pinch. While some CEOs have said that consumers are growing more cautious, others — like those in the airline industry — have celebrated strong and persistent spending. Corporate misfires can also lead to disappointing sales, even if their shoppers aren't necessarily pulling back on their spending.

CNN —Human rights attorney Amal Clooney is among a group of legal experts who advised the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor to seek arrest warrants against the top leaders of Israel and Hamas. The panel was convened by the ICC prosecutor Karim Khan and tasked to review the evidence and legal analysis underpinning his application for warrants against three Hamas leaders and two Israeli politicians, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It issued a detailed legal report on Monday, which said the panel found “reasonable grounds to believe” that the individuals named in the arrest warrants have committed war crimes or crimes against humanity. Injected medications called GLP-1 agonists are in high demand because they have proved to be so effective for weight loss. The difference, which was statistically significant, amounted to a 52% increased risk of being diagnosed with stomach paralysis while on a GLP-1 medication. Compared with those who were not taking a GLP-1 medication, those who did were about 66% more likely to be diagnosed with gastroparesis. This study found that 0.53% of patients on GLP-1 medications were diagnosed with stomach paralysis, or about 1 case of gastroparesis for every 200 people taking the drugs. People taking GLP-1 medications were also more likely to have nausea and vomiting or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and to be prescribed a proton pump inhibitor.

Why BORG drinks are dangerous for you
  + stars: | 2024-05-20 | by ( Terry Ward | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —If you’ve been to a party lately and haven’t seen someone drinking a BORG, you’re likely not partying with college students. As the drink’s name suggests, “it’s intended to get you extremely drunk.”What Lembke calls the BORG’s “social contagion factor” makes it even more dangerous. BORG posts starring gallon jugs with punny names such as Captain Borgan, Our Borg and Savior, Borgan Donor and Borgan Wallen proliferate on TikTok. Thinking along those lines is part of what makes BORGs potentially dangerous to the people turning to them as a party drink, Lembke said. The fact that BORGS are usually sweetened with a diluting agent such as electrolyte drinks or water flavor enhancers only makes them more dangerous, she said.
